If I were to generalize, and this is HIGHLY opinionated, I would say a lot of today's youth and many liberal thinkers absolutely hate police, some individuals with reasoning unaffiliated to any specific contact with a law enforcement officer. Some people go as far as saying they would never need police because they can fend for themselves in whatever situation may arise. These same people may have grown up in a wealthy suburb, crime-free if anything, where women could feel safe walking the dog at 3AM. Granted, others may have lived in the not-so-great areas, infested with drug trafficking, rape, and murder.
However, are these same people, who claim they would never need to pick up the phone to dial 911, ready to put a bullet through the skull of another human being whose mind is focused on harming them? Everyone makes use of their imagination in these scenarios, which is, by today's standards, normal human behavior. People like to believe that they would be able to keep focus, under pressure, when the flight or fight kicks in, no matter how dedicated their foe is to accomplishing his/her evil intentions. So the question arises. Who would ever need a "pig"? Yes, those damn dirty pigs who wallow in the mud. The same pigs who only eat donuts and LOVE to arrest you and use an overwhelming amount of force to subdue you because afterall, whatever YOU did isn't wrong. It's always them.
I often wonder what the world would be like without police, specifically the United States. The same, law abiding citizens, who see 911 as a mere memory, would still fear the same law breaking misfits but who would be in the middle now? There would no longer be a barrier to stop a thief from breaking into your car, nobody to come to the rescue when a group of thugs break into your house, nobody to find a 14 year old's rapist, and nobody to keep complete chaos from erupting in once quiet neighborhoods. Essentially, the only force left to intimidate chaos would be gone. Normal society would be a ghost. Or could it take another route? Would average citizens bond, form alliances, and combat criminals? Could it possibly be a new beginning to a courage people thought they never had?
The number one problem I've heard about police is overwhelming force. I'm not going to deny that their hasn't been genuine police brutality but for crying out loud, it's such a small fraction. If you search for "police brutality" on a website such as Youtube.com, you might as well make plenty of popcorn because you'll be in front of the computer for a very long time. But in contrast, why aren't their videos of all the good deeds police do? Oh yeah, there would probably be way too many. Besides, it'd be boring to watch an officer confront the parents of a child who may have gotten struck by a car and died, comforting them for many hours. It would be boring to hear about an off-duty cop saving 6 lives at a retail store. It would DEFINATELY be boring to read about an off-duty police officer saving a stranded motorist and giving his own life in the process. It really doesn't matter that a Ford P71 Crown Victoria Interceptor, or simply, a car with an LED lightbar, is enough, at times, to deter criminal behavior. It's depressing that many people are so bent on finding a reason to hate police that they ignore any and all good they have done for society.
Another misconception people have about police is enforcing the law vs. the creation of laws. If you smoked some weed and now you're in handcuffs, it must be the pigs! They've done it again because their measly salaries propel them to take your weed away from you. Please wake up if you have that mentality. Thank the government for making marijuana illegal. Natural herb or not, it's a felony to possess it. If it were legalized, some say it would probably make a police officer's job easier (that's if use of weed was regulated properly, like alcohol) but in the meantime, it's against the big bad law and unfortunately, police have to enforce it. After all, it's part of their job.
I've gotten pulled over by police and I've gotten tickets. I've had dealings with rude police but does it mean I hate an entire group of individuals who are doing their job? No. It all comes down to individual choice, whether it's the citizen or the cop; I guarantee that both parties have made bad decisions. |
