March 10, 2011 - Welcome to Cataclysm.ws!
To all who are familiar with the German rock/metal group Rammstein, you've undoubtedly seen the video entitled "Amerika." Yeah, the video that starts out showing the whole band dressed in American space outfits playing their instruments, singing about how much they like the good ol' USA. That is what you are fooled to believe at first. This video veritably mocks U.S. society, indicating how the U.S. is manipulative, influencing many other countries to adopt democracy. Or, it's an ad marketing campaign for U.S. flags and merchandise.

The song doesn't bother me. It's rather catchy in all actuality but I decided to browse the internet for other American opinions on the song/video. However, I was disappointed with my findings. I ran into "SongFacts.com," whose title I shouldn't have to explain, only to find the opposite of what I was looking for. Half the comments were either off subject or written out of pure ignorance.

For example, a comment by Jack from St. Paul, MN:
"Ramstein is perhaps the worst band on the face of the planet. My god, they're awful. I like that they're making fun of America, a country that needs to stop taking over the world, but their music is some of the worst garbage i've ever heard."

On the contrary, with America's economic situation, the United States is far from taking over the world. Of course, Jack is blantantly referring to former President Bush's decision to attack Iraq. However, I, in no way, see that as "taking over the world." In addition, I never understood how people had so much contempt for a group of musicians that they had to make a point of visiting SongFacts.com and complain about the garbage you have the freedom NOT to listen to.

Steve from Seldon, NY:
"I love 'America' and stand by my country 100%. But lets face it! The amerika video by rammstein is hilarious. If you don't think it's funny, you just don't have a sense of humor. Plus it's not the lyrics of rammsteins music., it's the energy and vibe it gives off that all us americans love."

I admire Steve's opinion and patriotism but apparently if I don't laugh at "Amerika" by Rammstein, I don't have a sense of humor. Similiar to how people hate police, that level of thinking is reason enough for Rammstein to produce such a song.

Queen from Carmel, NY:
"I do live in america and ya know what i completly agree I don't like living here I think that america trys to control all the other contries and i don't think that its fair even though they are just trying to help they usually end up making the problem worse"

Then go away. Nobody is keeping you here. If you don't like America for a hypothetical reason, then move to one of the countries that America isn't trying to take over. America isn't trying to take over the world in any way. Just because some kid had Nike shoes on in the video doesn't mean India belongs to the U.S. Maybe he didn't have shoes. Did you ever think of that? I'd rather wear Nike shoes than go barefoot in the dirt.

Taylor from Austin, TX:
"Led Zeppelin beats Rammstein by a long shot. That's saying alot, since part of Led Zep's name is German (or so I think)."

This is the comment it all boiled down to. Regardless of being on the internet or not, this type of behavior is present where conversation is present. I dub thee the "off-topic and annoyingly inappropriate comment." I don't need to elaborate.

In conclusion, I don't hate the song but I'm not 100% fond of it's lyrical content, which of course, propels people to conceive this idea of "tyrant America." I'll stick to listening to it on my Ipod and if I absolutely can't stand it, I'll change the song.
