One word. Maturity. This psychological process of becoming an adult is full of surprises. For instance, you never appreciate what you've been given until you get to that point of understanding. The complexity of maturity is vastly beyond a child's understanding, therefore, many children and teenagers alike lack the ability employ the mature thinking used by adults.

I, too, was just as naive as any child is at one point in my life. You know, around the same time I spent hours in my room, staring into a LCD monitor hoping excitement would spontaneously come in the form of a knock on the door from a "hot chick" or an e-mail telling me I just got my dream job. Yet, it didn't turn out that way. That is where maturity kicks in. Your effort and hard work always evens out in the form of happiness. You can't achieve anything without bleeding a little.

Appreciation kicked me in the face. You can only feel self-pity and remorse when you think back on how you had loving parents who would give you a kidney to survive if your life was in danger. Compare that to negligent parents who could simply care less for the kids they didn't want. That long overdue respect that you owe your parents overpowers the embarrassment of having your mother request a front seat in a high school classroom, your dad cheering you on at a high school football game while you play a saxophone in the band, and both mom and dad helping you with the homework you don't want to do.

The fact of the matter is, they'll be there for you and within you the rest of your life. Only the fool would let good people go and refuse to give up without a fight. Hell, I've been through a lot of bullshit with mom and dad but did they throw me out? I'm sure they wanted to but they didn't have it in them. Their potential and hope in me amassed and overshadowed the aggravation they went through and now, nearly a decade of nothingness, there is something.

You know, cleaning your room is considered to be a form of discipline for the mind. Remember that the next time you're nagged.
